George Washington Sinn (Zynn) was born April 23, 1825 in the Brandywine Manor area,
Chester County Pennsylvania.
He enlisted in the army on the 5th of August 1861 at Athensville, Montgomery county,
PA. in the 1st PA Cavalry Fourteenth Reserve, 44th Regiment under Colonel John P.
Taylor and Company B Captain William Litzenberg. He fought in the Civil War at
Gettysburg. He was discharged the 9th of September 1864. He re-enlisted on the 14th
of October 1864 in the 5th PA Cavalry, Company D. It is said that George sustained
an eye injury at Gettysburg, July 1863. Records indicate that he was wounded in the
right hand by buck shot. He was discharged as a saddler on the 8th of August 1865.
His name can be found on the second level of the Pennsylvania Monument on the left
hand side. [Photo] His name is spelled Zynn on the monument because that is how it was
recorded at enlistment. The story handed down to me is that this is where the name
change came. To receive his pension check for $12 each month he had to officially
change his name to Zynn. Then to add insult to injury, no pun intended, when a book
was written in 1865 about the 1st PA Cavalry Reserve his name was misspelled again,
it was spelled Bynn. Have a look at the book that chronicles the History of the 1st
Cavalry Reserve. His name is about three quarters the way down under Company B
enlisted men.
After being discharged he returned to Brandywine Manor and married Josephine Edwards on
June 10, 1866. He died October 24, 1908 and is buried in the Brandywine Manor Cemetery
with his wife and some of his family all sharing one monument on the west side of the
cemetery near Hibernia Road. Many other family members can be found elsewhere in this
cemetery.[Obituaries]
